Small molecule thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonist
Indicated for thrombocytopenia in persistent or chronic immune thrombocytopenia, hepatitis C infection, severe aplastic anemia
Not indicated for treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
Route of administration: Oral
Dosage range: 12.5mg to 150mg daily depending on condition and patient demographics
Interacts with polyvalent cations such as antacids and mineral supplements
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to eltrombopag
Common side effects include anemia, nausea, pyrexia, increased ALT, cough, fatigue, headache, diarrhea
Pregnancy and lactation: Not recommended for breastfeeding due to potential adverse reactions
Precautions: Monitor liver function in patients with chronic hepatitis C, increased risk of myelodysplastic syndromes, monitor platelet counts regularly
Special populations: Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients below 1 year old with ITP, chronic hepatitis C, and refractory severe aplastic anemia
Overdose effects: Excessive increase in platelet counts may result in thrombotic or thromboembolic complications
