Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by various bacteria
- Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis caused by specific bacteria
- Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia caused by various bacteria
- Secondary bacterial infections of Acute bronchitis caused by specific bacteria
- Skin and skin-structure infections caused by specific bacteria
- Urinary tract infections caused by specific bacteria
- Bone and Joint Infections caused by specific bacteria
- Gonorrhoea caused by specific bacteria
- Treatment of Early Lyme Disease (erythema migrans)
Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity
- Effective against β-lactamase producing strains
- Good stability to bacterial β-lactamase
- Active against ampicillin-resistant and amoxycillin-resistant strains
Dosage
- Different dosage for adolescents, adults, and pediatric patients
- Dosage for pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, uncomplicated Gonorrhoea, community acquired pneumonia, MDR Typhoid Fever, and Early Lyme disease
- Different dosage for parenteral use in adults, children, neonates, pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, gonorrhea, meningitis, and bone and joint infections
Administration
- Use of freshly reconstituted solution recommended
- Maintains potency for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5°C
Interaction
- No potentially hazardous interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Adverse effects occurred infrequently
- Effects reported include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
- Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms e.g. Candida
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excreted in human milk
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics & who has history of colitis
- Cephalosporin antibiotics may be given safely to patients who are hypersensitive to penicillin although cross reactions have been reported
- Not likely to be a problem at the recommended dose levels
