Indications

Pharmacology

Preparation of tranexamic acid
Strong antifibrinolytic action
Inhibition of plasminogen activation
Low acute toxicity and chronic toxicity
Well absorbed by oral route

Dosage & Administration

Adults:
- Usual dose: 500-1000 mg 3 times daily
- Mean recommended daily doses: 0.5-1 gm orally
- For therapy of hemorrhagic manifestations: 1-3 gm in divided doses
Children:
- Prophylaxis dose: 5-10 mg per kg body weight daily
- Therapeutic doses: Doubled from prophylaxis doses
Elderly patients: No reduction in dosage necessary unless evidence of renal failure

Interaction

Incompatible with penicillins, antagonized by thrombolytic drugs, potential for increased thrombus formation with estrogen-containing drugs

Contraindications

Known individual hypersensitivity
Thromboembolic disease
Serious kidney failure

Side Effects

Infrequent cases of sense of fatigue
Nasal blockage
Rare cases of postural hypotension
Nausea, diarrhea, and gastric pyrosis

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not recommended during known and presumed pregnancy
Unlikely antifibrinolytic effect in infant

Precautions & Warnings

Use in cases of hyperfibrinolysis
Prolonged therapy of hemorrhages
Reduce doses to prevent clot formation in urinary tract
Avoid use in serious renal insufficiency
