Indications
- Treatment of HIV-1 infection
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults
Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action: Inhibition of HIV reverse transcriptase
- Pharmacokinetics: Water soluble diester prodrug, low protein binding, half-life of approximately 17 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration once daily
- Recommended dose in adults: 245 mg tablet once daily
- Recommended dose in pediatric patients: 245 mg tablet once daily for those ≥12 years old and ≥35 kg
Interaction
- Cautious coadministration with didanosine, atazanavir, lopinavir, ritonavir
Contraindications
- Broken bone, enlarged fatty liver, severe liver disease, acute kidney disease, breastfeeding, low blood phosphate, increased blood acidity, overweight

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis reported
- Exacerbation of hepatitis after discontinuation of treatment
- New onset or worsening renal impairment
- Co-administration precautions
- Risk of HIV-1 resistance
- Fat redistribution in HIV-infected patients
- Immune reconstitution/redistribution syndrome

- Dose adjustment for renal impairment in adults
