Composition

Pharmacology
- Phosphate-binding compounds
- Low solubility salts formation
- Excretion with faeces
- Maximal binding capacity at pH 6-8
Dosage & Administration
- 3-10 tablets per day for adults
- Subdivided dose based on meals
- Starting dose of 3 tablets
- Maximum dose of 12 tablets
- Not recommended for children
- Must be taken with meals
- Should not be crushed or chewed
- Administered 2 hours before or 3 hours after other oral medications
Interaction
- Interferes with antibiotic absorption
- Affects iron absorption
- Adsorbs digoxin
- Decreases nitrofurantoin absorption
- Reduces penicillamine absorption

Precautions & Warnings
- Requires dietary consultation prior to use
- Continuous monitoring of serum calcium, magnesium, and phosphate
- Administer with caution for severe hyperphosphataemia
- Continuous monitoring of serum phosphate, magnesium, and calcium
- Long-term use may result in hypermagnesaemia
- Patients should seek medical advice before taking antacids
- May lead to hypercalcaemic episodes in chronic renal insufficiency patients
- Monitoring of symptoms and possible soft tissue calcifications
- Not recommended for children and adolescents
Overdose Effects
- Suppresses neural activity
- Systemic toxicity at serum concentration of 2.5 mmol/l
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Muscle weakness
- Arterial hypotension induced by vasodilatation
- Respiratory and cardiac arrest at serum levels above 10 mmol/l
- Symptoms of hypercalcaemia including muscle weakness, gastrointestinal disturbances, arrhythmia, and psychosis
- Long-term overdosing may lead to adynamic osteopathy
- Emergency treatment involves symptomatic and dialysate magnesium-concentration reduction
