Indications
- Management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- Relief of pain and inflammation after ocular surgery
- Reduction of eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
- Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
- Considered as a peripherally acting analgesic
- Biological activity associated with the S-form
- Linear pharmacokinetic property
- Highly protein bound
- Metabolized in liver
- Excretion in the urine
Pharmacology
- Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system
- Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose of 10 mg every 4-6 hours for tablets
- Short-term use (up to 7 days) for tablets
- Not recommended for chronic use for tablets
- Dosing guidelines for different age groups and conditions for injection
- Recommended dose for eye drops
Interaction
- Increase in side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
- Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
- Reduction of anti-hypertensive effect with beta blockers
- Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE inhibitors
- Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- Use not recommended for children under 16 years
- Contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery
