Indications

Pharmacology

Stable and pleasant-tasting oral systemic alkalizer
Metabolizes to Potassium Bicarbonate
Highly palatable and tolerable
Does not neutralize gastric juice

Dosage & Administration

Adult dosage: 10 ml 3 times daily (diluted with water)
Pediatric dosage: 5 ml 3 times daily (diluted with water)
Dosage for preventing kidney stones, gout, and kidney disease related acidosis

Interaction

Concurrent administration with potassium-containing medication, potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or cardiac glycosides may lead to toxicity

Contraindications

Severe renal impairment with oliguria or azotemia
Untreated Addison's disease
Acute dehydration
Severe myocardial damage
Hyperkalemia from any cause

Overdose Effects

Rarely causes serious hyperkalemia in persons with normal excretory mechanisms, but can be lethal if mechanisms are impaired. Treatment includes elimination of potassium-containing foods/medications, intravenous administration of dextrose solution, and use of exchange resins, hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
