Description
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic
- Tetracycline group
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Spirochete, mycoplasma, rickettsia, and mycobacteria
Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Active against Staphylococcus aureus and Nocardia
- Effective against penicillin-resistant strains
- Active against certain Gram-negative strains
- Sensitive to various anaerobes and Bacteroides fragilis
- Active against Haemophilus influenzae and H. ducreyi
- Useful for infections with Actinomyces, Brucella, and Vibrio cholerae
- Active against Nocardia, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and Rickettsiae
- Active against spirochetes and Plasmodium falciparum
Dosage
- Usual dose of 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia and non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals
Interaction
- Impaired absorption by antacids and iron-containing preparations
- Impaired absorption by bismuth salicylate
- Barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin decrease half-life
- Concurrent use may render oral contraceptives less effective
- Anticoagulant therapy may require downward dosage adjustment
- Avoid concurrent use with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in pregnant women due to risk of staining and effect on bone growth
