Description
Bromazepam is indicated for emotional disturbances, functional disturbances in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, disturbances in the gastrointestinal and urinary tract, psychosomatic disorders, reactions to chronic organic disease, and for treating symptoms of tension, anxiety, and depression. Its pharmacology involves selective reduction of tension and anxiety at lower dosages and sedative and muscle-relaxant properties at higher dosages by binding to the GABA-A receptor. The standard dosage for outpatient therapy is 1.5-3 mg up to three times daily, while in severe cases, especially in hospital, the dosage may range from 6-12 mg 2 or 3 times daily for up to 8-12 weeks. It is administered orally and contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to bromazepam, severe respiratory or hepatic insufficiency, and sleep apnea syndrome. Common side effects include fatigue, drowsiness, muscle weakness, reduced alertness, and confusion. Its safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established, and precautions include the risk of physical and psychological dependence, withdrawal symptoms, and advice to decrease dosage gradually.
