Description
- Doxofast is a bronchodilator medication used to treat bronchial asthma, bronchospasm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component.
Dosage
- 200 mg tablet for elderly, 400 mg tablet for adults, 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet for children above 12 years, 6-9 mg/kg body weight for children (6-12 years), 400 mg Doxophylline SR tablet if required daily dose is 400 mg
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives, acute myocardial infarction, hypotension, lactation
Interaction
- Avoid administration with other xanthine preparations, limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food, caution required with ephedrine or sympathomimetic drugs, concurrent administration with certain drugs may affect hepatic clearance
Pharmacology
- Doxophylline selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, inhibits platelet activating factor (PAF) and generation of leukotriene production
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy should be carefully evaluated based on risk-benefit ratio, contraindicated during lactation
Side Effects
- Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, headache, irritability, insomnia, tachycardia, extrasystoles, tachypnea, rare cases of hyperglycemia or albuminuria, severe cardiac arrhythmias, tonic-clonic seizure in case of overdose
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias, tonic-clonic seizure, discontinuation of treatment may be required, no specific antidote
