Indications

Pharmacology

Doxophylline selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, and affects adenosine A1 and A2 receptors

Dosage and administration

  • Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
  • Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
  • Children:
    • 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily (age >12 years)
    • 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily for ages 6-12 years

Interaction

Avoid administering with other xanthine preparations, limit caffeine consumption, and use caution with concurrent administration of certain drugs such as erythromycin and propanolol

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives, acute myocardial infarction, hypotension, and lactation

  • Addiction risk: No risk of addiction or dependence

Overdose effects

  • Effects:
    • Severe cardiac arrhythmias
    • Tonic-clonic seizure
  • Treatment: Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse
