Indications
- Adjunctive therapy for primary hypercholesterolemia
- Reduction of cardiovascular events in coronary heart disease patients
- Treatment for homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia
- Adjunctive therapy for homozygous sitosterolemia
Pharmacology
Localizes at the brush border of the small intestine and inhibits absorption of cholesterol via sterol transporter
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose of 10mg once daily
- Can be administered with or without food
Interaction
Coadministration with fibrates is not recommended
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Contraindicated in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in serum transaminases
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Overall incidence of adverse events similar to placebo
Pregnancy & Lactation
Should be used during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies risk to the fetus
Precautions & Warnings
Exclude or treat secondary causes of dyslipidaemia prior to initiating therapy
Use in Special Populations
- No dosage adjustment required for 10 to 17 years
- Not recommended for children below 10 years
