Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating complications of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergies such as hayfever and urticaria
Pharmacology
- Ketotifen has anti-allergic properties
- Properties of an antihistamine
- Marked anti-anaphylactic properties
- Sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions
- Effective in preventing asthmatic attacks
- Sustained as effective orally as a selective mast cell stabilizer administered by inhalation
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dose: 1 mg twice daily with food, may increase to 2 mg twice daily in severe cases
- Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food
- Elderly dose: Same as adult dose or as advised by the physician
Interaction
- Potentiates effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols
- Reversible fall in platelet count observed in some patients receiving Tifen concomitantly with oral antidiabetic agents
Contraindications
- Should be avoided with oral antidiabetic agents during pregnancy
- Recommendations for use in pregnancy or when breastfeeding cannot be given due to lack of evidence on teratogenic effects
Side Effects
- Drowsiness
- Isolated cases of dry mouth
- Slight dizziness at the beginning of treatment
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation due to lack of evidence on teratogenic effects
Precautions & Warnings
- Continuation of previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Ketomax
- Possible exacerbation of asthma if previous treatment is not continued
- Special caution with systemic corticosteroids and adrenocortical insufficiency in steroid-dependent patients
- Impairment of reactions during the first day of treatment
- Patients should be warned not to operate vehicles or machinery until the effect of Ketomax treatment is known
- Avoid alcoholic drinks
- Potentiates effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol
Overdose Effects
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Bradycardia
- Respiratory depression
- Recommended elimination of the drug with gastric lavage or emesis
- General supportive treatment may be required
