Indications

Pharmacology
Essential nutrient required for tissue growth & repair, adrenal gland function, enhanced immunity & healthy gums. Acts as an antioxidant, coenzyme, and supports healthy hair & skin
Dosage & Administration
- Oral tablet administration
- Oral sachet administration
- Parenteral administration
- Maximum safe dose is 2000 mg daily in divided doses
- Maximum Dose: 2000 mg/day (4 sachets/day)
- Utilization best after IM administration for parenteral route
- Intravenous injection requires dilution into a large volume parenteral
- Average protective dose for adults is 70 to 150 mg daily
- Doses of 300 mg to 1 g daily recommended in the presence of scurvy
- Doses of 300 to 500 mg daily for wound healing for a week or ten days preoperatively and postoperatively
- Doses of 1 to 2 g daily recommended for severe burns
- Three to five times the daily optimum allowances may be adequate in increased need for vitamin C
- Parenteral drug products should be inspected visually prior to administration
Interaction
- Potentially hazardous interactions: Incompatible with certain medications
- Useful interactions:
- Increases apparent half-life of paracetamol
- Enhances iron absorption from gastrointestinal tract
Side Effects
Mega-doses may cause diarrhea, abdominal bloating, iron over-absorption, hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, hemolysis, and fetal abortion in pregnant women
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safe in normal doses, but high daily intake may cause abortion in pregnant women
Precautions & Warnings
- Ingestion of megadose during pregnancy has resulted in scurvy in neonates
- Contradicted for patients with hyperoxaluria
- Reactive substance in the redox system
