Indications

• Lower respiratory tract infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Intra-abdominal infections
• Gynecologic infections
• Bacterial septicemia
• Bone and joint infections
• Skin and skin structure infections
• Endocarditis

Pharmacology

• Imipenem and Cilastatin combination
• Imipenem - penem antibacterial drug
• Cilastatin sodium - renal dehydropeptidase inhibitor
• Bactericidal activity inhibits cell wall synthesis
• Affinity for penicillin binding proteins
• Stability in the presence of beta-lactamases

Dosage & Administration

• Dosage based on suspected or confirmed pathogen susceptibility
• Adult dosage for normal renal function
• Reduction in dose for patient with decreased renal function
• Reconstitution with appropriate diluent before intravenous infusion
• Pediatric dosage for non-CNS infections

Interaction

• Concurrent administration with probenecid
• Increased risk of seizures with concurrent use of ganciclovir

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any component of the combination

• Phlebitis
• Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting
• Rash, pruritus, urticaria
• Pain at injection site, erythema
• Vein induration
• Fever
• Hypotension
• Seizures, dizziness, somnolence

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C
• No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
• Caution in nursing mothers
