Indications
- Hyperlipidemias of type lla, llb, III, IV & V
Pharmacology
- Fenofibrate is a fibric acid derivative
- Reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-lipoprotein B
- Increases in HDL and apo-proteins apoAI apoAII
- Reduces serum uric acid levels
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 200 mg per day for hypercholesterolemia or mixed hyperlipidemia in adults
- Initial dose of 67 to 200 mg per day for hypertriglyceridemia in adults
- Dose should be individualized according to patient response
- Should be given with a meal for optimal bioavailability
Interaction
- Potentiates the anticoagulant effects of warfarin
- May improve glucose tolerance and have additive effect when administered with antidiabetic drugs
- May increase the nephrotoxicity of cyclosporine
- Cautions should be taken against the use with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fenofibrate
- Severe renal or hepatic impairment
- Existing gall bladder disease
- Breastfeeding mothers
- Photosensitivity to ketoprofen

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Special care needed in patients with renal disease
- Discontinue if myotoxicity suspected or creatinine kinase concentration increases significantly
- Liver function tests recommended every 3 months for the first year
Overdose Effects
- No specific treatment for overdose with Fenocap
- General supportive care indicated
- Hemodialysis should not be considered due to high plasma protein binding
