Indications
- Treatment for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)

Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
Dosage & administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children over 10 years is same as adult dosage
- Dosage for children aged less than 6 months has not been established
- Dosage may be continued for up to 14 days if required
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and stool changes
- Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting and flatulence
- Headache and dizziness
- Allergies in the form of rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia and eosinophilia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
- Pseudomembraneous colitis has been reported
Pregnancy & lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Use with caution when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & warnings
- Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Treatment alters the normal flora of the colon
Overdose effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Adverse reactions in healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g
