Indications

  • Treatment for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment for Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections
  • Clinical efficacy against Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Clinical efficacy against Escherichia coli
  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive organisms
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-negative organisms
  • Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity
  • Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Absorption about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food

Dosage & administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosage for children over 10 years is same as adult dosage
  • Dosage for children aged less than 6 months has not been established
  • Dosage may be continued for up to 14 days if required

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
  • Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side effects

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and stool changes
  • Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting and flatulence
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Allergies in the form of rash, pruritus, urticaria
  • Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia and eosinophilia
  • Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
  • Pseudomembraneous colitis has been reported

Pregnancy & lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Use with caution when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & warnings

  • Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Treatment alters the normal flora of the colon

Overdose effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Adverse reactions in healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g
