Description
Lincosamide antibiotic derived from lincomycin, effective against various bacteria strains
Dosage Administration
- Clindamycin Capsule:
- 150 mg-300 mg every six hours for serious infections
- 300 mg-450 mg every six hours for more severe infections
- Should be taken with a full glass of water to avoid oesophageal irritation
- Clindamycin Powder for oral solution:
- 8-12 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses for serious infections
- 13-16 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses for severe infections
- 17-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses for more severe infections
- Half teaspoon (37.5 mg) three times a day for pediatric patients weighing 10 kg or less
- Clindamycin IV IM Injection:
- 600-1200 mg/day in 2- 4 equal doses for serious infections in adults
- 1200-2700 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses for more severe infections in adults
- 15 to 20 mg/kg/day in 3 to 4 equal doses for neonates (less than 1 month)
- 20 to 40 mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equal doses for pediatric patients (1 month of age to 16 years)
Interaction
Enhances the action of neuromuscular blocking agents, should be used with caution in patients receiving such agents. Antagonism demonstrated between Dalatic and erythromycin
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients previously found to be sensitive to clindamycin or any of the ingredients

- Oesophagitis and oesophageal ulcer
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Pruritus
- Skin rashes
- Urticaria
Pregnancy Lactation
Pregnancy Category B, crosses the placenta and appears in breast milk, should be used only if clearly needed
Precautions Warnings
Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
Use in Special Populations
- Newborns and infants: Appropriate monitoring of organ system functions desirable
- Geriatric use: Dose adjustment not necessary
Overdose Effects
Rare, similar adverse reactions to normal doses can be expected, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removing Dalatic from the serum
Reconstitution
- Powder for oral solution: Shake well to loosen the powder, add boiled and cooled water, reconstituted solution should be used within 2 weeks if kept at room temperature
- IV Dilution Compatibility:
- Concentration of Dalatic in diluent for infusion should not exceed 18 mg per ml
- Infusion rates should not exceed 30 mg per minute
- Physico-Chemical Stability of diluted solutions monitored for 16-32 days at room temperature and refrigeration
