Medicine Details

Indications

  • Gastric reflux
  • Heartburn
  • Indigestion
  • Flatulence associated with gastric reflux
  • Heartburn of pregnancy
  • Epigastric and retrosternal distress due to gastric reflux

Pharmacology

  • Combination of antacids (Calcium carbonate and Sodium bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium alginate)
  • Neutralizes excess stomach acid
  • Forms a protective barrier over the stomach contents

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral Suspension:
    • Adult and children over 12 years: 10-20 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
    • Children 6 to 12 years: 5-10 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
    • Children under 6 years: Not recommended
    • Elderly: No dose modifications necessary
  • Chewable Tablet:
    • Adults and children 12 years and over: Two to four tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
    • Children under 12 years: Tablets should be given only on medical advice
  • Hepatic Impairment: No dose modification necessary
  • Renal Insufficiency: Caution if highly restricted salt diet is necessary

Interaction

Consider a time-interval of 2 hours between Gavisus intake and the administration of other medicinal products such as Tetracyclines, Digoxine, Fluoroquinolone, Iron salt, etc.

Contraindications

Not recommended for patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or to any of the excipients

  • Constipation
  • Flatulence
  • Stomach cramp or belching
  • Sensation of swelling with excessive dose

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Can be used during pregnancy if clinically needed
  • Can be used during breastfeeding
  • No negative effect on human fertility

Precautions & Warnings

  • High sodium content to be considered on a restricted salt diet
  • Care needed in treating patients with hypercalcaemia and renal issues
  • Not generally recommended for children under 12 years except on medical advice
  • Should not be given to patients with phenylketonuria

Overdose Effects

Symptomatic treatment should be given; abdominal distension may be noticed
