Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
Pharmacology
- Blocks vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II
- Does not inhibit ACE (kininase II)
- Blocks binding of angiotensin II to the AT 1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle
Dosage & Administration
- Usual recommended starting dose of 20 mg once daily when used as monotherapy
- Dosage must be individualized
- No initial dosage adjustment is recommended for elderly patients
- May be administered with or without food
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported with digoxin or warfarin
- Not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system
- Effects on P450 enzymes not expected
- Co-administration with NSAIDs may result in deterioration of renal function
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Well tolerated with incidence of adverse reactions similar to placebo
- Most common adverse reaction was dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Discontinue product when pregnancy is detected
- Can cause injury to developing fetus in second and third trimester
Precautions & Warnings
- Changes in renal function may be anticipated in susceptible individuals
- Treatment may be associated with oliguria and/or progressive azotemia
Overdose Effects
- Most likely effects of overdose are hypotension and tachycardia
- Gastric lavage or induction of emesis may be considered if intake is recent
