Description
- Doxair is a medicine used to treat bronchial asthma, bronchospasm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary disease with a spastic bronchial component.
Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
- Doxophylline is a novel bronchodilator that selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, and has decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors.
Dosage and administration
- 200 mg tablet two or three times daily for elderly
- 400 mg tablet two or three times daily for adults
- 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily for children over 12 years
- 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily for children 6-12 years
- Doxophylline SR tablet to be taken once daily if required daily dose is 400 mg
Interaction
- Not to be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
- Caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Concurrent administration with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, propanolol, phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, and cigarette smoking may affect clearance and hepatic levels
- Adjusted dosage may be necessary in case of interactions
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- During lactation

- Irritability
- Insomnia
- Tachycardia
- Extrasystoles
- Tachypnea
- Hyperglycemia (rare)
- Albuminuria (rare)
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias (in case of overdose)
- Tonic-clonic seizure (in case of overdose)
Pregnancy and lactation
- Animal tests show no interference with pre and postnatal growth
- Use during pregnancy should be evaluated case by case
- Contraindicated during lactation
- Does not affect ability to drive and use machines
Precautions and warnings
- Factors that may reduce hepatic clearance may increase plasma levels
- Age, congestive cardiac decompensation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, severe liver disease, concomitant infections, and concurrent administration of specific drugs may affect clearance
- Monitoring of blood levels recommended in certain cases
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and renal impairment
Overdose effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse in case of overdose
