Indications

  • Constipation of any etiology
  • Relief from prolonged & recurrent constipation
  • Bowel clearance before surgery, childbirth or radiological investigations

Pharmacology

  • Stimulant laxative
  • Activated by colonic bacteria
  • Local action in the colon
  • Promotion of water & electrolyte accumulation in the colonic lumen
  • Stimulation of defecation
  • Reduction of transit time
  • Softening of the stool

Dosage & Administration

  • For oral administration
  • Recommended to be taken at night for evacuation the following morning
  • Start with the lowest dose
  • Maximum recommended daily dose should not be exceeded

Interaction

Concomitant use of diuretics or adreno-corticosteroids may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance. Concurrent administration of antibiotics may reduce the laxative action of Pico.

Contraindications

  • Ileus or intestinal obstruction
  • Severe painful and/or feverish acute abdominal conditions potentially associated with nausea and vomiting
  • Acute inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Severe dehydration
  • Known hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any other component of the product

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Avoid use during the first trimester

  • Prolonged excessive use may lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance
  • Harmful for those suffering from alcoholism
  • To be taken into account in pregnant or breast-feeding women, children, and high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy

Overdose Effects

Chronic overdosage may cause chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypokalemia, renal calculi, metabolic alkalosis, and muscle weakness
