Mode of Action
- Neuroleptic with anxiolytic properties
- Antidepressant properties
- Bipolar thymoleptic with activating properties
- Antidepressant, anxiolytic, and activating properties
- Maximal serum concentration reached in about 4 hours
- Biological half-life: flupentixol - 35 hours, melitracen - 19 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 2 tablets orally daily in the morning and noon
- Morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets in severe cases
- Elderly patients: 1 tablet in the morning
- Maintenance dose: 1 tablet orally in the morning
- Additional treatment with a sedative recommended in acute phase for insomnia or severe restlessness
Interactions
- May enhance response to alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants
- Simultaneous administration of MAO-inhibitors may cause hypertensive crises
- Neuroleptics and thymoleptics impact antihypertensive effect and adrenaline/noradrenaline effects
Contraindications
- Immediate recovery phase after myocardial infarction
- Defects in bundle-branch conduction
- Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
- Acute alcohol, barbiturate, and opiate intoxications
- Previous use of MAOI within two weeks
- Not recommended for excitable or overactive patients
Side Effects
- Rare in recommended doses
- Transient restlessness
- Insomnia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Preferably not given during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Gradual withdrawal of previous sedative tranquillizers
Overdose Effects
- Intoxications dominated by anticholinergic symptoms
- Extrapyramidal symptoms
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
- Gastric lavage and activated charcoal administration
- Support for respiratory and cardiovascular systems
- No use of epinephrine (adrenaline) for such patients
