Description
- Prioxim is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is indicated for the treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Urinary Tract Infections, etc. It is a third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration.
DosageAndAdministration
- The usual course of treatment is 7 days, which may be continued for up to 14 days if required.
RecommendedDosage
- 200-400 mg daily for adults, 8 mg/kg/day for children, and 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days in typhoid cases.
RenalImpairmentDosage
- In patients with creatinine clearances of less than 20 ml/min, a dose of 200 mg once daily should not be exceeded.
InteractionWithAnticoagulants
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients. Caution should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.
SideEffects
- Adverse reactions including gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry changes, and miscellaneous reactions may occur.
PrecautionsAndWarnings
- Should be given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs, penicillin-sensitive patients, and in patients with markedly impaired renal function.
PregnancyAndLactation
- Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
