Description

Cefixime is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is indicated for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, otitis media, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and more.

  • Interaction:
    • Potential increases in prothrombin times in a few patients

  • Pregnancy & Lactation:
    • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
    • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
    • Caution advised when administered to a nursing woman
  • Precautions & Warnings:
    • Use with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
    • Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to cross-allergenicity
    • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
    • Effect on normal flora of the colon leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
    • Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless essential
  • Overdose Effects:
    • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
    • No specific antidote exists
    • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
    • Adverse reactions at high doses similar to those seen at recommended doses
