Composition
- Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source)
- Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- DX tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source)
- Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Effervescent tablet contains Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg
- Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Pharmacology
- Adequate Calcium in the blood is vital to bodily functions
- Calcium useful for prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis
- Vitamin D essential for healthy bones and Calcium absorption
Dosage & Administration
- Take one tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water
- Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water to drink orally
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline preparations
- Hypercalcaemia may increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides during treatment with calcium and vitamin D
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria
- Nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the GI tract
- May cause constipation
- Rarely produces hypercalcemia
- May cause allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth and drowsiness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided
- No indications that vitamin D at therapeutic doses is teratogenic in humans
Precautions & Warnings
- Serum calcium levels should be followed during long-term treatment
- Renal function should be monitored
- Caution in patients with impairment of renal function
- Risk of soft tissue calcification should be taken into account
- Should be prescribed with caution to patients suffering from sarcoidosis
- Should be used with caution in immobilised patients with osteoporosis
Overdose Effects
- Can lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
- Symptoms of hypercalcaemia may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, etc.
- Persistently high calcium levels may lead to irreversible renal damage and soft tissue calcification
