Composition
- Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU per tablet
- Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU per DX tablet
- Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP per effervescent tablet
Pharmacology
- Adequate Calcium in the blood is vital for bodily functions
- Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption and stimulates bone formation
- Clinical studies show synergistic effects of Calcium and vitamin D on bone growth and prevention of Osteoporosis
Dosage & Administration
- One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water
- Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water and drink orally
- Taking with full stomach ensures better absorption
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins or laxatives may reduce vitamin D absorption
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline preparations
- Hypercalcaemia may increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides
- Caution required with bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride concomitant use
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the components
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- Oral administration may irritate the GI tract
- May cause constipation
- Rarely leads to hypercalcemia
- May cause allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, and drowsiness
- Skin rash reported with Vitamin D Supplements
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided during pregnancy
- No indications that vitamin D at therapeutic doses is teratogenic in humans
- Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Serum calcium levels should be followed during long-term treatment
- Renal function should be monitored
- Caution required in patients with high tendency to calculus formation
- Vitamin D should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Caution required in sarcoidosis patients
Overdose Effects
- Can lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
- Symptoms may include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, fatigue, and mental disturbances
- Treatment involves discontinuation and supportive care
