Description
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Indicated for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria at easily achievable plasma concentrations
- Absorption is about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
- Generally well tolerated, with mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed in clinical trials

Usability Features

Indications

Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, extendable to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily for severity of infection, for children dosage based on weight and age
- Cautious administration in patients with impaired renal function
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients, caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Includes gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry effects, and miscellaneous reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed, caution needed while administering to nursing women

- Cautious administration for patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs, penicillin-sensitive patients, marked renal function impairment
- Altering normal flora of the colon and potential overgrowth of clostridia

- Gastric Lavage may be indicated, no specific antidote available, minimal removal via hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
