Description

  • Ecosprin is indicated for prophylaxis against arterial occlusive events, mild to moderate pain, chronic diseases accompanied by pain and inflammation, and as an antipyretic.
  • The medicine works by decreasing platelet aggregation and inhibiting thrombus formation on the arterial side of the circulation.
  • The dosage varies for different conditions such as pain, inflammatory diseases, suspected acute coronary syndrome, after myocardial infarction, acute/transient ischaemic stroke, and following bypass surgery.
  • Interactions may occur with anticoagulants, oral hypoglycaemic agents, phenytoin, sodium valproate, probenecid, sulphonamides, and in susceptible subjects, it may precipitate bronchospasm or induce asthma attacks.
  • Contraindications include use in children less than 12 years, breast-feeding mothers, active peptic ulcer, bleeding due to haemophilia, intracranial haemorrhage, and other ulceration.
  • Side effects for the usual dosage include mild symptoms such as nausea, dyspepsia, gastrointestinal ulceration, and bronchospasm.
  • It is not recommended to use aspirin during the last 3 months of pregnancy, unless directed by a doctor, and caution is advised for lactating mothers.
  • Precautions should be taken in asthma, uncontrolled blood pressure, pregnant women, nasal polyps, and nasal allergy.
  • Overdosage may lead to symptoms like dizziness, tinnitus, sweating, nausea, vomiting, confusion, hyperventilation, CNS depression, coma, cardiovascular collapse, and respiratory depression. Treatment of overdosage consists of gastric lavage, forced alkaline diuresis, and haemodialysis in severe cases.
  • Ecosprin belongs to the therapeutic class of anti-platelet drugs, and it should be stored in a cool and dry place, protected from light.

Indications

  • Prophylaxis against arterial occlusive events

Pharmacology

  • Decreases platelet aggregation
  • Inhibits thrombus formation
  • Analgesic for headache, transient musculoskeletal pain, and dysmenorrhoea
  • Anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties
  • Enteric-coated to reduce intestinal disturbance and gastrointestinal ulceration

Dosage & Administration

  • Pain, inflammatory diseases, and as antipyretic: Aspirin 300 mg 1-3 tablets 6 hourly with a maximum daily dose of 4 gm
  • Suspected acute coronary syndrome: 150 mg-300 mg immediately unless there are clear contraindications
  • After myocardial infarction: Aspirin 150 mg daily for 1 month, long-term use of 75 mg daily recommended thereafter
  • Acute ischaemic stroke/Transient ischaemic stroke (TIA): Starting dose of 150 mg-300 mg daily, followed by 75 mg daily
  • Following bypass surgery: 75 mg-300 mg daily starting 6 hours post-procedure

Interaction

  • Enhances the effect of anticoagulants, oral hypoglycaemic agents, phenytoin, and sodium valproate
  • Inhibits the uricosuric effect of probenecid
  • May increase the toxicity of sulphonamides
  • May precipitate bronchospasm or induce asthma attacks in susceptible subjects
