Indications
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Urinary tract infections (UTI)
- Treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interference in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Approximately 40% to 50% absorption whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily for severity of infection
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Dosage in renal impairment
- No safety and efficacy established in children aged less than 6 months
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Mild and self limiting adverse reactions observed
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests observed
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alters the normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia
- Not recommended in pregnancy or nursing mothers
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in small numbers of healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from the profile seen in patients treated at the recommended doses
