Composition
- Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source)
- Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source)
- Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Effervescent tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Pharmacology
- Adequate Calcium is vital for bodily functions
- Useful for prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis
- Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption from GI tract
- Stimulates bone formation
Dosage & Administration
- Take with plenty of water
- Once or twice daily
- Take with full stomach for better absorption
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Ion exchange resins and laxatives may reduce vitamin D absorption
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with absorption of tetracycline
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the preparation components
- Severe renal insufficiency
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- Irritation to the GI tract
- Constipation
- Rarely, hypercalcemia
- Allergic reactions
- Irregular heartbeats
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Decreased appetite
- Dry mouth
- Drowsiness
- Skin rash with Vitamin D supplements
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- Reproductive toxicity with high dose of vitamin D in animals
- Avoid overdoses to prevent adverse effects on the developing fetus
- No indications of teratogenicity in humans
- Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor serum calcium levels during long-term treatment
- Monitor renal function
- Especially important in elderly patients and those with a high tendency to calculus formation
- Use with caution in patients with impairment of renal function
- Consider risk of soft tissue calcification
- Caution in patients with severe renal insufficiency
- Caution in immobilized patients with osteoporosis
- Consider dose when prescribing other drugs containing vitamin D
Overdose Effects
- Hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcemia
- Symptoms include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, polydipsia, polyuria, bone pain
- Severe cases can lead to cardiac arrhythmias, coma, and death
- Treatment may involve discontinuing calcium and other medications, rehydration, and monitoring
