Description
- Relieves symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relieves symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Improves health-related quality of life and work/activity productivity
Dosage and administration
- Adults and children 12 years and older: Tablet: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
- Children from 6 months to less than 2 years: Suspension: 15 mg or 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) twice daily
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine is considered an 'inverse agonist' of the H1 receptor
- Prevents the activation and subsequent downstream effects of histamine binding
Interaction
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole may result in increased level of fexofenadine in plasma
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole observed
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side effects
- Nervous system disorders: headache, drowsiness, dizziness
- Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea
- Immune system disorders: hypersensitivity reactions with manifestations such as angioedema
Pregnancy and lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy unless clearly necessary
- Not recommended for mothers breast-feeding their babies
Precautions and warnings
- Administered with care in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Antihistamines have been associated with adverse reactions like tachycardia and palpitations
Special populations
- The pharmacokinetics of fexofenadine are altered in individuals with renal impairment
- Adverse events were similar in elderly patients compared to patients under 65 years of age
Overdose effects
- Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue and dry mouth reported with overdose of Fexobest
- No clinically significant adverse reactions reported at single doses up to 800 mg
