Description

  • Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults and children from 10 years of age and adolescents
  • Can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or with insulin
  • Lower both basal and postprandial plasma glucose
  • Decreases hepatic glucose production and intestinal absorption of glucose
  • Improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization
  • Dosage must be individualized based on effectiveness and tolerance
  • Usual starting dose for adults: 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day (immediate release tablet)
  • Usual starting dose for children: 500 mg twice a day (immediate release tablet)
  • Swallow extended release tablet whole, without crushing, cutting, or chewing
  • Usual starting dose for adult extended release tablet: 500 mg once daily with the evening meal
  • Dosage adjustment for renal impaired patients based on eGFR levels
  • Potential interactions with Furosemide, Nifedipine, and cationic drugs, among others
  • Contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity, acute metabolic acidosis, severe renal failure, and acute conditions altering renal function
  • Possible side effects include gastrointestinal disorders, taste disturbance, lactic acidosis, and skin reactions
