Description
Used to reduce the cholesterol saturation of bile and to promote the dissolution of gallstones.
Pharmacology
- Decreases cholesterol absorption
- Suppresses liver cholesterol synthesis
- Promotes the formation of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes
- Protects cholangiocytes against cytotoxicity of hydrophobic bile acids
- Completely absorbed in the upper intestine
- Biologic half life ranges from 3.5-5.8 days
Dosage & Administration
Doses for various conditions including Dissolution of Gall stones, Primary Billiary Cirrhosis, Acute Viral Hepatitis, Alcoholic Fatty Liver, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, and Dissolution of Gallstones and Non-Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis
Interaction
Should not be used with drugs that increase bile cholesterol, and should be avoided with bile-acid binding drugs
Contraindications
- Non-functioning gall-bladder
- Calcified and pigmented gallstones
- Inflammatory bowel disease

Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B, effectively used for cholestasis of pregnancy, no documented problems in humans regarding breastfeeding
