Description

• Used to treat excessive postoperative bleeding
• Provided orally or intravenously
• Can reduce blood loss in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting
• Can be used to treat overdose and/or toxic effects of thrombolytic pharmacologic agents
• Pharmacology involves inhibition of plasminogen activators and antiplasmin activity
• Dosage must be adjusted to individual cases based on severity of the hemorrhagic event
• Rapidly cleared by renal route
• Dosage usually ranges from 8-16 gm a day
• Equally effective by mouth and intravenous injection
• Administration must be repeated every 4-6 hours
• Must be continued until complete cessation of all symptoms
• Should not be used when there is evidence of an active intravascular clotting process
• Not to be used in the presence of DIC without concomitant heparin
• Pregnancy Category C, safety and efficacy not established in patients younger than 18 years
• Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light
