Indications
- Excessive postoperative bleeding treatment
- Reduction of blood loss in coronary artery bypass grafting
- Treatment of overdose/toxic effects of thrombolytic agents
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of plasminogen activators
- Antiplasmin activity
Dosage & Administration
- Individualized dosage based on severity of hemorrhagic event
- Rapid renal clearance requiring repeated administration every 4-6 hours
- Average daily dose of 8-16 gm
- Effectiveness via oral and intravenous administration
- Intravenous administration for severe cases or rapid blood concentration
Contraindications
- Active intravascular clotting process
- Uncertainty of primary fibrinolysis or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) without proper differentiation
- Tests for DIC vs primary fibrinolysis differentiation
