Indications

• Diarrhoea
• Poisoning due to foods
• Poisoning due to heavy meals
• Poisoning due to drugs
• Flatulence due to diet
• Flatulence due to other factors

Description

• Medication used to treat poisonings by mouth
• Effective within a short time
• Does not work for certain poisonings
• Can be taken by mouth or given by nasogastric tube
• Other uses include inside hemoperfusion machines

Pharmacology

• Active charcoal binds the poison
• Prevents absorption by the gastrointestinal tract
• Administered on the scene or at a hospital's emergency department
• Used in hemoperfusion system
• Treatment of choice for many poisonings

Dosage & Administration

• Adult dosage for diarrhoea: 2-4 tablets tds-qds
• Children dosage for diarrhoea: ½ adult dose
• Adult dosage for poisoning: 2-4 tablets per kg of body weight
• Children dosage for poisoning: 3-4 tablets per kg of body weight
• Adult dosage for flatulence: Disintegrate 1-2 tablets. Repeat every 2 hours.

Interaction

Not to be administered together with other drugs

Contraindications

• Febrile diarrhoea
• Avoid in case of intoxication with corrosive substances

Side Effects

• No adverse reactions in recommended dosage
• Constipation and intestinal obstruction may occur after very high doses
• Prevent constipation with saline laxatives
• Stools turn black after intake of tablets

Precautions & Warnings

• Not effective in certain intoxications
• Specific antidote may be required in some cases
• Avoid aspiration in unconscious patients
• Monitor gastrointestinal sounds in multiple dose therapy
• Not to be used in cases of poisoning with pesticides

• Lack of toxicity in overdose
• Symptoms may include constipation and intestinal obstruction
