Description
- Atorvastatin is a selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, indicated as an adjunct to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B (Apo-B), and triglycerides levels.
DosageInstructions
- 10 mg once daily for adults, with a maximum dosage of 80 mg once daily. For children (10-18 years), the initial dosage is 10 mg once daily, increased if necessary at intervals of at least 4 weeks to usual max. 20 mg once daily.
Pharmacology
- Lower plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; maximum plasma concentrations occur within 1 to 2 hours
StorageConditions
- Keep in a dry place away from light and heat
- Keep out of the reach of children
Interaction
- Increased risk of myopathy with concurrent administration of cyclosporine, fibric acid derivatives, niacin
- Plasma concentrations of atorvastatin decreased approximately 35% when coadministered with antacid

- Hypersensitivity to any component of this medication
- Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases

- No clinically significant difference in LDL-C reduction with Atasin between men and women
OverdoseEffects
- Specific treatment is not available for atorvastatin overdose
- Liver function tests should be performed and serum CK levels should be monitored
