Indications
- Therapy component for atherosclerotic vascular disease
- Adjunct to diet for inadequate response
Pharmacology
- Competitive inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase
- Reduction of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL
- Increase in HDL concentrations
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration
- Initial adult dose of 20-40 mg once daily
- Max adult dose of 80 mg/day
- Child dose of 20 mg once daily for 9-16 yr olds
Interaction
- Potential interactions with coumarin anticoagulants
- Increased risk of myopathy with certain drugs
- Reduced bioavailability with rifampicin
Contraindications
- Acute liver disease or unexplained elevation of serum aminotransferases
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Avoiding specific dosage administration
