Indications

• Used to stop breast milk production
• Treatment for high levels of prolactin
• Can be used to treat conditions caused by hormonal disturbance

Description

• Dopamine receptor agonist
• Reduces prolactin release
• Treats hormonal imbalance

Pharmacology

• Dopamine receptor agonist
• Inhibits prolactin secretion
• High affinity for D2 receptors

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended dosage: 0.25 mg twice a week
• Dosage increases should not occur more rapidly than every 4 weeks
• Different dosages for preventing milk production, stopping lactation, and reducing prolactin levels

• Interacts with medicines to lower blood pressure
• Interacts with medicines used to treat mental illness
• Interacts with medicines for nausea and vomiting
• Interacts with medicines for severe migraine headaches

Contraindications

• History of serious mental disease
• Liver or kidney disease
• High blood pressure in pregnancy associated with swelling and protein in the urine
• History of mental illness associated with child-birth

• Should not be taken if planning to breastfeed
