Dexophan 10 mg/5 ml (Syrup)

Indications

• Chronic dry cough
• Unproductive cough
• Acute dry cough interfering with normal function or sleep

Composition

• Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide BP 10 mg per 5 ml sugar-free syrup

Pharmacology

• Cough suppressant with central action on the cough center in the medulla
• Rapid absorption from GI tract
• Excretion of metabolites in urine accounting for up to 50% of ingested dose

Dosage & Administration

• Adults and Children over 12 years: 15 to 30 mg three to four times per day
• Children between 6 and 12 years: 5-15 mg up to four times per day
• Children between 2 and 6 years: 2.5-5 mg up to four times per day

Interaction

• Fatal interactions reported with phenelzine and dextromethorphan

Contraindications

• Contraindicated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors
• Prescribed with caution to patients with liver disease

Side Effects

• Rare adverse effects including nausea and dizziness
• No analgesia or addiction properties
• Excitation, confusion, and respiratory depression may occur after overdosage

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Avoided in the first three months of pregnancy
• No information on secretion into breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Not to be used for coughs associated with smoking, asthma, or emphysema
• Not for productive coughs
