Indications
- Relieves dry (non-productive) cough
- Used for pre & post-operative cough sedation
- Can be used in the acute cough of any etiology

Pharmacology
- Acts directly on the brain's cough center
- Suppresses cough
- Safe and non-sedating
- Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration
- Sustained-release tablet with maximum concentration reached within 9 hours
- Extremely protein-bound
- Plasma elimination half-life of about 13 hours
- Active metabolites have antitussive action
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 2-3 Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablets daily
- Adult dosage: 15 ml of Butamirate Citrate syrup 4 times daily
- Adolescent dosage: 1-2 Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablets daily
- Adolescent dosage: 15 ml of Butamirate Citrate syrup 3 times daily
- Children (3-6 yrs) dosage: 5 ml of Butamirate Citrate syrup 3 times daily
- Children (6-12 yrs) dosage: 10 ml of Butamirate Citrate syrup 3 times daily
- Children (2 months-1 yr) dosage: 0.50 ml of Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops 4 times daily
- Children (1-3 yrs) dosage: 0.75 ml of Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops 4 times daily
Interaction
- Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient
Side Effects
- Good tolerance
- Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo in rare cases
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Can be used with caution during the remainder of pregnancy if indicated by a physician
- Benefits of administration during breastfeeding should be weighed against the risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Suppresses the cough reflex
- Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
- Consult a doctor if the cough persists for more than 7 days (more than 3 days in children younger than 12 years of age)
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms: drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, hypotension
- Standard emergency procedures: activated charcoal, saline laxatives, cardio-respiratory resuscitation
