Description
- Cefix is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is indicated for the treatment of acute infections such as upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections.
Indication
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Urinary Tract Infections
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage and administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection
- Dosage for children varies by age and weight
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients, caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side effects
- Adverse reactions observed were mild and self-limiting
- Frequent side-effects include diarrhea and stool changes, less frequent side-effects include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
Pregnancy and lactation
- Caution advised during pregnancy, not well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Not known if excreted in human milk, caution advised when administered to nursing women
Precautions and warnings
- Caution advised in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
Overdose effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated, no specific antidote exists
- Adverse reactions in healthy volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g were not significantly different
