Description

  • Cefix is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is indicated for the treatment of acute infections such as upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections.

Indication

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme

Dosage and administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection
  • Dosage for children varies by age and weight

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients, caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side effects

  • Adverse reactions observed were mild and self-limiting
  • Frequent side-effects include diarrhea and stool changes, less frequent side-effects include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain

Pregnancy and lactation

  • Caution advised during pregnancy, not well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Not known if excreted in human milk, caution advised when administered to nursing women

Precautions and warnings

  • Caution advised in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated, no specific antidote exists
  • Adverse reactions in healthy volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g were not significantly different
