Dosage & Administration

Interaction

  • Combining with other β-blocking agents not recommended
  • Close monitoring with catecholamine-depleting drugs
  • Risk of exacerbating rebound hypertension with clonidine withdrawal
  • Use caution when coadministered with myocardial depressants

Contraindications

  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Overt heart failure
  • Second or third degree A-V block
  • Right ventricular failure from pulmonary hypertension
  • Sinus bradycardia

  • Teratogenic effects in rabbits: None at doses up to 12.5 mg/kg/day
  • Embryolethal effects in rabbits: At 12.5 mg/kg/day
  • Use during pregnancy: Only if potential benefit justifies potential risk
  • Excretion in human milk: Not known

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment
  • Increased reactivity in patients with history of severe anaphylactic reaction
  • Potential unresponsiveness to usual doses of epinephrine
