Indications
- Adjunctive therapy to reduce elevated total cholesterol
- Reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol
- Increase HDL-C levels in adult patients with primary hyperlipidemia or mixed dyslipidemia
Pharmacology
- Lowers plasma cholesterol levels
- Inhibits HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver
- Increases the number of hepatic LDL receptors
Dosage & Administration
- Dose range: 1 to 4 mg orally once daily
- Recommended starting dose: 2 mg
- Maximum dose: 4 mg
- Dosage adjustment based on lipid levels
- Special dosage for patients with renal impairment
Interaction
- Contraindicated with cyclosporine
- Caution with erythromycin and rifampin
- Administration with fibrates should be cautious
- No significant interaction with warfarin
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any component
- Active liver disease with unexplained persistent elevations of hepatic transaminase levels
