Indications
- Management of moderate to severe post-operative pain
- Relief of pain and inflammation after ocular surgery
- Reduction of eye inflammation or redness due to allergies
Description
- Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
- Biological activity associated with the S-form
- Highly protein bound
- Largely metabolized in the liver
- Excretion of metabolism products and some unchanged drugs in the urine
Pharmacology
- Potent analgesic NSAID
- Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme system
- Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended tablet dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use
- Injection may be used for moderately severe, acute pain
- IM administration should be given slowly and deeply into the muscle
- Onset of analgesic effect within 30 minutes for IV or IM
- Duration of analgesic effect usually 4 to 6 hours
Interaction
- Other NSAIDs or aspirin increase side effects
- Anti-coagulants enhance anti-coagulant effect
- Beta Blockers reduce anti-hypertensive effect
- ACE Inhibitors increase risk of renal impairment
- Methotrexate enhances toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- Not for use in children under 16 years
- Contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Precautions & Warnings

- Caution in patients with peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, or liver dysfunction
- Discontinue use of topical NSAIDs in case of corneal epithelial breakdown
- Do not administer while wearing contact lenses
