Indications
- Prevention of flu in adults and adolescents
- Treatment of flu in adults and children
Pharmacology
- Oseltamivir is a prodrug of oseltamivir carboxylate
- Inhibits neuraminidase, a viral surface enzyme
- Prevents the release of viruses from infected cells
Dosage
- May be taken with or without food
- Standard oral dose for treatment of influenza for adults and adolescents
- Recommended oral dose for prophylaxis following close contact with an infected individual
- For prophylaxis during a community outbreak of influenza
Administration
- May be taken with or without food
- May be mixed with sweetened food products for consumption
Interaction
- Clinically significant drug interactions are unlikely
- Co-administration with amoxicillin does not alter plasma levels of either compound
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the components of the product
Side Effects
- Most frequently reported adverse events are nausea and vomiting
- Additional adverse events occurring in <1% of patients include unstable angina, anemia, pneumonia, pyrexia, and peritonsillar abscess
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Insufficient human data upon which to base an evaluation of risk to the pregnant woman or developing fetus
- Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the breast-fed infant
Precautions & Warnings
- No evidence for efficacy in any illness caused by agents other than influenza viruses Types A and B
- Efficacy in patients who begin treatment after 40 hours of symptoms has not been established

Overdose Effects
- No reported experience of overdose
- Single dose of up to 1000 mg has been associated with nausea and/or vomiting
