Indications
- Relief of dry (non-productive) cough
- Pre & post-operative cough sedation
- Acute cough of any etiology
- Whooping cough
- Cough due to acute lower respiratory tract infections
Pharmacology
- Butamirate Citrate acts directly on the brain's cough center to suppress cough
- Safe and non-sedating
- Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration
- Maximum concentration reached within 9 hours with sustained-release tablet
- Extremely protein-bound
- Plasma elimination half-life of about 13 hours
- Active metabolites with antitussive action
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet - 2-3 tablets daily
- Adult dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup - 15 ml 4 times daily
- Adolescent dosage: Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet - 1-2 tablets daily
- Children dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup - 5 ml 3 times daily (3-6 yrs)
- Children dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup - 10 ml 3 times daily (6-12 yrs)
- Adolescent dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup - 15 ml 3 times daily
- Children dosage: Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops - 0.50 ml 4 times daily (2 months-1 yr)
- Children dosage: Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops - 0.75 ml 4 times daily (1-3 yrs)
Interaction
Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient
Side Effects
- Good tolerance
- Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo in rare cases
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Caution advised during the remainder of pregnancy
- Benefits should be carefully weighed against the risks during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
- Cough persisting for more than 7 days (more than 3 days in children younger than 12 years) requires consultation with a doctor
Overdose Effects
Symptoms include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension
