Description

  • Rocovas is a medication indicated for the treatment of heterozygous hypercholesterolemia, homozygous hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Indication

  • Heterozygous Hypercholesterolemia (Familial and Non familial)
  • Homozygous Hypercholesterolemia (Familial)
  • Mixed Dyslipidemia (Fredrickson Type IIa and IIb)
  • Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease

Pharmacology

  • Selective and competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase
  • Increases hepatic LDL receptors
  • Inhibits hepatic synthesis of VLDL

Dosage

  • Dose range: 5-40 mg once daily
  • Starting dose for HoFH: 20 mg/day
  • Pediatric patients with HeFH: 5-10 mg/day for 8 to less than 10 years age

Administration

  • Can be taken with or without food, at any time of day

Interaction

  • Cyclosporine: Combination increases Rocovas exposure. Rocovas dose should be limited to 5 mg once daily
  • Gemfibrosil: Combination should be avoided
  • Concomitant lipid-lowering therapies: Use with fibrates and niacin products may increase the risk of skeletal muscle effects

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to product components
  • Liver disease
  • Pregnant women and women who may become pregnant
  • Nursing mothers

Side effects

  • Headache
  • Myalgia
  • Constipation
  • Asthenia
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea

Pregnancy and lactation

  • Safety in pregnant women has not been established
  • Not known whether Rosuvastatin is excreted in human milk

Precautions and warnings

  • Skeletal muscle effects (e.g., myopathy and rhabdomyolysis)
  • Liver enzyme abnormalities and monitoring
  • Use in children: The safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established
