Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes
- Active against some cestodes
- Treatment of intestinal nematode infections
- Treatment of hydatid disease
- Vermicidal activity
- Ovicidal activity
- Larvicidal activity
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Blocking glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Depleting energy levels of helminths
- Inhibition of tubulin polymerization
- Metabolized in the liver
- Poor absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
Dosage & Administration
- 400 mg single dose for specific infections
- 400 mg daily for strongyloidiasis or taeniasis
- 200 mg single dose for children of 1-2 years
- Not recommended for children under 1 year
- 400 mg twice daily for Hydatid disease
- 15 mg/kg body weight daily for patients weighing less than 60 kg
- 800 mg maximum total daily dose
- 400 mg once daily for giardiasis

Contraindications
- Not used in neonates
- Dose reduction in children weighing less than 10 kg
- Avoided in pregnant women
- No evidence of dose alteration in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
